It took me a few years to learn that lesson. The main thing you have access to on a cold river is gallons of COLD WATER, in case you overheat. But I've been borderline hypothermic before. Now I just wear about one more layer than I need. If I get warm, I pour freezing water over my head. It's that simple. I also recommend you bring a drybag to stow extra clothes in, just in case the sun comes out and blazes all day, you can remove a layer.

Anyway, being too warm on a river is mildly uncomfortable. Too cold is dangerous.
