I've never taken my dogs on the river unfortunately, so I'm not best qualified to answer, but from what I understand and have seen this section of the river is pretty much class 1 with maybe a couple very easy class 2's. Most of what I have seen basically qualifies as riffles. However, I have taken my dogs swimming at the East Laporte River Access and they love it. If you search for it on google you can see some photos of the river at the access point. Also, unless they are releasing from both forks of the river(they are only releasing from the east fork sat and sun) the river is quite mild. You could always pick up a couple doggie life jackets just in case.
