The Reach is a great system. I have been lucky enough to have come across a couple of them and play around with them. What is the Reach? The Reach is a small device that is designed to grab a rope that is floating in the river. The system consists of a compact throw bag that throws like a football,has a gusset that allows you to stuff with ease. Best of all the bag attaches to your strong swimmers belt. What this allows you to do is release the bag down stream in a pin sittuation so your team mates can retrive the rope using their Reach. Now they have a fixed line to you which will allow them to get you out quicker. It does not fail, it will always grab the rope. Me and a couple of buddies have found many uses, as a swimmer all I had to do was role to my back release the bag and throw it towards an eddie, my friend then took his reach device crossed the lines the Reach clipped the rope and he pulled me to shore. I have fixed ropes on eddie lines, swam the rapid, threw the reach over the fixed rope and was able to execute a self rescue with no effort. There are many more uses for this great safety tool.
