That only applies to open ocean swell, not near shore as a surfable wave....

.....and it's set of waves speed equals 3/2 the period (in knots), and the individual waves are moving at 3 times the period, again in knots. So a 20 second period is sending a set of waves across the ocean (deep water) at 40 knots and the individual waves in the set move at 60 knots. Amazing, huh?
