I've used paddle leashes for about 5 years now with SOTs and waveskis.  If you use the coiled leash that extends to 8' on a boat like the Kaos ... it will be long enough not to whack you with the boat and short enough not to get in the way.  I've heard all the worries about getting tangled in the leash, but it just does not happen, also with a Kaos you are not very likely to roll that boat when the sh-t happens.  If you are surfing around board surfers you absolutely should be using a paddle leash so you don't kill someone.  IF you surf by your self, you should be using one too so you don't lose your boat.

This leash works well, and the website is very good, run by kayakers for kayakers ...

Also  kayaksandiego.com sells a really good coiled leash that works well for waveskis and would also work for the Kaos if you want to go with a shorter leash .... very durable too. Unfortunately their webpage seems to have gone offline.
