You could be swimming after the leg if you use an ankle leash. I had a Kaos back in the day and the best option is paddle leash to bow.

One time competing in Ventura, years ago, I had a really bad wipe-out. There was a storm the day before and I totally bit off more than I could chew at the time. Anyhow, I was slow on the take-off and went forward over the falls. The Kaos dove straight down into the trough like a duck and the force ejected me forward and to the bottom while the Kaos with paddle leash to bow whipped tumbling over the top of my head. It went to shore with my paddle without me and I had to swim in. It was a hard swim but I considered the alternative. Had I the Kaos been leashed to my ankle, the big wave would have beat me with the tumbling boat while vigoursly yanking my leg joints and tendons, then dragged me underwater till it felt it had enough fun to let me go. Thanks, I'd rather swim and glad I took an endurance building swim class before the competition.

Then there's one more thing. When you do swim, the tendency to tread water (swim upright) the leash on your ankle will will kick the boat back toward you. If you don't look quickly and have a standard leash, you could get it in the teeth.
