If I recall correctly Malcolm had said he made skis many years ago but I think he found more of a market in all the types of boats he makes (ie IC, HP, polo etc) so he went that way. I have no idea what his "track record" was with them then, but I'm guessing pretty much all of the other manufacturers of skis and other water craft had a beginning at some point in thier careers.
I'm not sure what the record of performance of the Merlin is so I can't comment about that, but I'm sure there have been some that like it as there are no "one model fits all" boats I know of. I base that on the amount of models available today. The fact this boat is essentially a "one off" since he cut the deck off the Merlin means that he has room for changes like the footloops, seat etc.
As someone who knows the basics of surfing, both in the manufacturing end and actually doing it, Malcolm has continued to produce products that people continue to buy because they work. Granted a ski is not a boat. However, Mike Johnson does the same thing in reverse. His boats are all based on a ski bottom and builds up from there. Maybe that can work in reverse and maybe not. There is a contest this weekend where hopefully there will be sufficient surf to properly test this ski by many people so we'll all know for sure if it works or not. I remember one flop was his first attempt at an HP boat. I don't remember what it was called, but it didn't quite perform when he brought it to Santa Cruz and then it went away. He got into HP when he started making Randy's UFO's and he's gone on from there.
As to making something that is a threat to kayaksurfing, what isn't? Boogie boards, standup, board & body surfing come to mind right off hand. I don't think any are a threat personally, I think of them as options since conditions can dictate the best craft for the day.
Like yours, just my opinion.
