note carving off

One tends to get rusty in new england and I've had some problems getting off waves. I mostly surf a mega cyclone (Ic, no fins) or a marauder (with 3" fin). In the mega I seem to loose edge and/or spin out into too much turn and then a back surf. I'm thinking I need to concentrate on getting the weight over the rail, using my paddle with a vertical brace straight up into the wave face and keeping my forward/back lean to a minimum, initiating the turn off sooner. Any other tips? Sometimes I have carved off using a trailing upwave rudder which converts from a pull to keep the kayak from turning off and to accellerate down the line into a push to dig in the rail. I'm not sure how well that works.
