Just stay from everyone if you don't know what you are doing yet. When you can control the boat venture closer. I show respect when I travel and surf. When they see I am respectful the hate seems to drop to just suspicion. When they see I can actually surf pretty well it usually turns into conversation. By the end of the session everyone seems OK with my presence. YMMV.
