Here is some of the story...
Flounder
Ok, feeding into the Columbia River across from Hood River in Washington state is a beautiful river called the White Salmon. Good solid Class III to Class IV at high water. The Put in ws owned by a kind hearted local named Ruth. She sold the property to the Forest Service who ripped out the system to lower rafts and catarafts to the river by a cable system because it could not pass the federal standard for overhead cranes and carry several tons. Everyone who knew this river were P.O.'ed because this was the centerpiece on the PutIn. For two years the Forest Service didn't replace the cable system and commerical rafters had to hike their boats through the trail ripping the hell out of their gear. Eventually the Forest Service put in the rails and is currently planning improvements for the upper parking lot for the end of next Summer. The rails are a compromise, the place to send suggestions is the Forest Service office in Hood River that manages the river. If you do't do anything you have only yourself to blame. There are no realistic Put Ins upstream from BZ Corners except for kayakers. Hopefully the Forest Service will develope the Put In into something great. If you see Brandon the Forest Service River Ranger thank him for doing a helluva job. Also if you ever meet Ruth thank her for all the years of maintaining the Put In. Also there are Forest Service employees in the RV trailer at the Put In.
