My condolences to the friends and family. Does anyone know if Charley Walbridge at American Whitewater has been notified?
"Three Oar" can be very dangerous at higher levels. There is plenty of room to avoid it on the right and there's really no reason to challenge its reversal. The Alpine Section has some serious spots for as popular and as reasonable as it usually is. "Taco Hole" is another feature that has claimed life in its reversal, but unlike "Three Oar", "Taco" is stickier at lower levels. No reach of river is completely safe all of the time. Even the characteristically tame Nanatahala in NC has claimed its share of the unwary.
