Guide Training Turns Tragic on South Fork American
New

A 29 year San Francisco man died as result of leg/foot entrapment on the South Fork American near Coloma, California on June 29 He was part of a group of guide trainees going down the South Fork of American this past Monday when their raft hit Gunsite Rock at Troublemaker. Several swimmers went downstream and unfortunately his leg became stuck in an undercut rock about 70 yards downstream. Rescue attempts were unsuccesful and recovery was made once PG&E shut down releases from the upstream dam. I have swam this rapid 5 times and the swim is a nasty on. Once, when faced with a big rock directly in front of me, agressive swimming helped me avoid this big boulder.
The guide trainees were not from a commercial company but from a " helping type organization". Our prayers to the victims family and friends. jc
