I can relate to your spinning, I felt the same way when I started doing multi day trips last year. So I just got off the grand and rowed a rental 18' boat. 3 other people owned their boats. I think it doesn't really matter if the gear touches the floor, but the weight of it should be on the tubes, not the floor. So anything was strapped to the frame, or a hung floor, or a hung beaver board. there's always risk of pinching on a rock depending on how high the floors are hung, but we had tons of weight on those floors and beaver boards. Granted, the grand isn't rocky as far as going over them, but I got a lot more comfortable not being paranoid about stuff touching the floor. Just don't have the floor take the weight, that would also affect where the floor rides, tracking, and maneuverability.
