and that's the funny thing...

hillbillies...at least east ky hillbillies are not politically correct. at all. but politically, they tend to be more D due to strong union tendencies based on years of coal company abuse. hard core Rs in our area aren't very common here and the ones who are tend to be Lincoln Rs, not neo-cons. frankly, when you grow up in the hills, you have friends who are dirt poor and friends who aren't. friends from the wrong side of the tracks and friends who aren't.  you tend to have a more even keel politically because you know money doesn't make the person, it just gives them nicer shoes. you also realize tomorrow you could have nothing...something lost on most modern Rs, imho. So the Rs around here tend to be traditional and moderate, not the modern wingnut type. same for the Ds, as far as moderate goes.

here's a sad/true/funny (depending on your sensibilities) story from my youth. around 1968 or so, the mayor of Elkhorn City received a letter that claimed a busload of black folk were on the way with the intent of moving into the coming (not yet built) Section 8 apartment complex. Elkhorn City, at the time, was 100% white.
For the next few days, no less than 50 fully armed local citizens--councilmen, preachers, police chief and others--staked out on the rail overpass coming into town to politely (with lead) suggest they turn around.  that bus never came, but you'd have thought the japanese fleet was on the way as seriously as the "threat" was taken.  i'll never forget it.

times have changed since then. the town is still 90% white, not because of prejudice but because thats the demographic of appalachia. thankfully, nobody seems to mind the multi-colored freaks that descend upon us each October. at least they haven't loaded the shotguns yet, anyway.
