1. For me, Internet access must be billed by connect time.  When I got my present Samsung phone, the Blackberry was only available with a full time connection, at about $100/month.  With the Samsung I pay only for actual connect time, and since the only thing I use it for is to check river gauges, I pay an average of under $5/month for Internet service.
  
2. I would like it to have the portable Windows operqating system (or at least be able to display Excel files), so I can synch address books with my PC, and so I can periodically put an updated copy of my river log (Excel sheet) on the phone, so I'll have it with me to compare river levels with levels from past trips to the same river.
  
Yeh, I could bring the laptop, and I back it up all my work to an external drive every week or so, but still I would hate to carry such a valuable item in a vehicle that spends so much time parked at lonely riversides.
