I learned to rappel with double biners and a hand tied swiss seat
New

We trained on 60' towers, which were supposedly the height that everything looked "high" and that seemed to be the truth. Looking out the door of a bird never bothered me as much as doing an Australian off the towers. We just used two carabiners as brakes and took a double wrap around them using two 1/2" braided lines. We tried the seats out of the same line. While stepping out into thin air on a rope 100' up is definitely a rush, I never thought it was anything but part of the job and didn't see it as my hobby.
At least they didn't come up with Fast Roping until I was out of Air Assault units. That's just freaking nuts.
