McCain did not fire up the his base. Sure, diehard Repugs were going to vote for him, but the evangelical footsoldiers were not showing up at his rallies, were not signing up to work for him, didn't have any enthusiasm at all. Now, with Palin around he's getting 10,000 people at rallies and people are going to run through walls for the ticket. McCain was never going to win in a landside, and so it was critical for him to get a volunteer base to drive turnout. Which was the reason Bush won in 2004.
My point was that while there might have been a few choices McCain could have made that fired up the base, or had crossover appeal (Ridge, I discount Lieberman), only Palin and Jindal had the credibility needed to fire up the base while at the same time had the potential to have that crossover appeal. And it seemed to me they gave up a chance to go for that crossover appeal last night. For which I am happy. |
