I went to undergrad there, and it is the best place on Earth for 18-22 year-olds. But I've spent some time there since then, and it's a weird town, due mainly to the geographic and legal resitrictions on growth.
Honestly, though, when you are there, it seems like LA is hours away. It doesn't have any "suburb" of LA feel at all. Driving through, I can see how the 1 1/2 hours distance might make it seem close, but you'd never know LA was close.
I've lived in San Diego for 7 years now and it's a nice place to live. But it's way too far from rivers, and with LA to the north, it feels backed in a corner. Other than that, I love San Diego. Never lived in San Francisco, but I grew up east of Sacramento and could definitely see myself in norcal again at some point.
Whitewater 1/2 hour from Santa Barbara ;)
