Handpaddles on slow moving water can be a burden on all areas of the body. If your strong on certain parts of the body and not on the others the the bad parts will try to compensate. My best advice is to start doing some crunches and leg lifts to strengthen that back. Build up M some six packs and i dont mean beer%^)
At least with a stick you tend to lean forward less, and sit up straight
