We put in on Hwy 172 and took out on Hwy 77. Broad River Outpost shuttled us. We had 14 boats. It was raining. We went anyway. ;-) The rain raised the level considerably, so that we never had a drag-yer-boat moment the whole trip. It rained the entire day, lightly to moderately, and ended just as we arrived to set up camp on a big sandy beach. I'd guess the campsite is about 10-12 miles from the put-in. The Broad has 3 shoals on this section, all prior to the camping area. The last one is under a bridge that has a sand dredging machine there. I did not know that river sand is a valuable commodity, and this sand is granite sand... mommy where does sandbox sand come from? This last bit of shoals was a river-wide ledge-y thing. None of the three shoals dumped our boats. We camped and had a nice fire. A dog followed us, swimming in the river and scampering up the banks, for about 2 miles. Seriously, for 2 miles! Finally one of the couples in the group put her in their boat. She was determined to come with us! They took her home to the Atlanta area and are checking to see if she is micro-chipped. If not then they will keep her. A turkey hunter came up to our campsite and talked to us yesterday morning, and the couple asked him if he recognized the dog. He shook his head and said, "Just one of hundreds that run around here." She has one brown and one blue eye. We are not sure if she can see out of both eyes. She is very mellow, sits and lays down on command, and swims like a fish. I saw a bald eagle. No doubt, white head and tail. I paddled right up to him, and was almost under him when he flew away. I was stunned. I have only seen one that close on Town Creek. There were some goose couples that didn't like us around, but didn't dive-bomb us. I saw several fish jumping, heard a beaver slapping his tail as he went by our campsite in the dark, and also heard many song-birds whose calls I didn't recognize. Yesterday it was supposed to be sunny, but it stayed cloudy all day. The river had risen a lot more and the current was swift, so it was a quick trip to the takeout, about 8 more miles. I want to do this trip again when it is warm and swimming weather and sunny! But it was a wonderful time. Even in the rain. ;-) I am keeping "Old Stinky" Perception saddle in my boat. I realized that it is perfect for this kind of trip. IF I start OC1'ing, I'll get a canoe that's already outfitted for WW. My XL-12 is very stable, sitting up on the seat, and packed for an overnighter.
