In many areas around the Midwest, that isn't enough to pay for health care and housing for somebody with rent or mortgage (keep in mind many people are stuck with $1K health premiums - even at that income level). Even with two incomes, it barely puts a family into the middle class after one takes out the taxes and other bills. You can survive, but that is about it. Locally, we have retail and unskilled labor, and day care on the low end and the finance and high end sales (scam) on the high end. Skilled labor and Stem jobs are harder to come by and do not pay what they used to. Even in the medical field, we have a local nursing glut with wages down and new grads with less than a MS having a hard time. Same situation with teachers.
