Web pages these days are chock full of links to other things, almost all of which are resolved by DNS lookups. If your DNS server is having problems, you can (temporarily) switch your machine to use Google's free DNS servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which are almost guaranteed to work.
