If he just had addressed it all head-on, released all his financials and answered all questions directly initially then every time it came up later he could say "I already answered all those questions - that's old news" and it would have blown over. Since he is resisting and then reluctantly letting stuff out drip by drip he has loosed the dogs of the press on what they smell to be a story and lost control of it.

It's the suspicion that more is hidden that keeps the press interested. Even the RNC is complaining that Romney's advisors have not handled it professionally.
