The other side of this story is just coming out, not all of it favorable to the victim. It is apparent that the police did investigate, at least one officer wanted to press charges, but a lot of them also thought there was enough physical evidence at the scene to justify self defense (this really wasn't about Stand Your Ground at all). OK, the guy displayed bad judgement getting out of the vehicle to follow a stranger in his neighborhood. But so far that is the extent of the proof being offered against him. There has been a lot of supposition here about his mindset, the victims age, the fact that he was unarmed, etc, none of which are relavent if the victim initiated the violence by punching Zimmerman and was in fact beating his head against the ground. If that is the case, it's self defense. I still have reasonable unarmed combat skills, but I wouldn't let an larger unknown opponent get me on the ground get me on the ground if I were carrying at the time. It may be a bad shooting, but with the hard information that is being leaked so far, I wouldn't put this case in front of a jury. Prosecutors don't like pursueing losing cases and there certainly is reasonable doubt with what is being released so far.
They may try for a negligent homicide against Zimmerman to keep everyone happy, but that is going to be about it and I wouldn't want to try that case either.
