In the majority of cases with dams, you get a lake where your river used to be...

...not that there aren't exceptions, but in the vast majority of cases more whitewater is destroyed than is created by dams.

If I had to pick my poison for energy, I would say let's develop as much wind energy as we can, use solar where it makes sense, use our best nuke technology for base load power, and use natural gas for variable power to manage peaks.

I'm not saying we should run out and tear down every dam, but there are a bunch of dams that just don't make sense. Glenn Canyon is definitely on the list of ones that never should have been built. I doubt it will ever be torn down, but I think a good compromise would be better management of flows. If they would just quit jacking flows up and down, and provide for a high volume run off events in spring to help flush out the Grand Canyon it would be a huge improvement. Any lost power generation at Glenn Canyon could easily be made up downstream at Lake Mead. It has plenty of extra storage and generating capacity.
