There is a small but committed contingent of paddlers in the Philly area. You could try posting something on the philadelphia canoe club website (www.philacanoe.org) as one way to meet people. Their trips are open to members and nonmembers. The Lehigh Valley also has a couple of clubs. The best way might be to come out to the local playspots (if and when we ever get any rain) and just hang and meet the regulars. Lots of Philly area paddlers congregate at Scudders (see AW pages for info) on Tues and Thurs evenings or either day on the weekend when the Delaware River level is ~6000 cfs or higher. If you want to ingratiate yourself with the crew, bring high quality cold liquid refreshments for the post-paddling debriefing. The wingdam at Lambertville is also popular at lower levels.
If we get a ton of rain, head up to Point Pleasant PA to run the Tohickon (Class III, again see AW pages for info). You should be able to run into some group to go down with. There is also a release the first weekend of November which ends up being somewhat of a festival. The Philly crowd is usually the biggest group of partyers at the takeout.
As you may have been able to tell, currently nothing local is anywhere close to running since it has been a long dry spell. Pray for rain. Look forward to meeting you.
