I had the rope on my older JK backband break from abrasion on the D-ring where the rope loops to the backband. The abrasion was due to the biner/D-ring being rusted or corroded. I think in older models the biner/D-ring wasn'tstainless while in 2007 and newer models, it is stainless. Anyway, I went to the local hardware store, got a few feet of some cheap 1/4" poly rope (3/16" would probably be better) and was able to re-loop the rope in probably 15 minutes or less. Yes, fishing the rope back through cockpit combing is a pain in the ass and definitely took more than one attempt and a bit of patience (if it was easy, it would have taken about 2 minutes to completely replace the rope instead of 15), but overall was probably a lot easier than trying to retrofit some other backband to the boat. If you are concerned about it breaking again, it is really easy to carry a few extra feet of replacement rope in the back of the boat or in your first aid kit or whatever you carry with you on the river.
