Doesn't work to teach your girlfriend to kayak - they will never have the fire for the sport you have.
When the first kid came we would switch - she would paddle one day and watch the kid, and I would paddle the next. Or she would start the run, I would hike down to middle of the run with the kid and we would switch. We both wanted to stay in the sport.
When the second kid came, the smartest thing we did was to buy a raft. Took him down an easy III when he was 6 months old, and got them kayaks when they got older. But just because they have two avid boaters as parents, doesn't mean that is what your kids will like.
But get used to boating class IIIs - you can't risk your kid's future for an adrenalin rush. If you can't give up boating (or at least scale it down considerably), you should think twice about getting married, and don't think at all about having kids.
Very few of the guys I boated with when I started who got married are still in the sport, and those that are married fellow boaters.
