has its own charm. I once did a self-support on the Selway (5-days) with a group of mostly open canoeists (Louie, I figured you'd like to hear this)---and these guys styled some pretty technical rapids (III and IV) fully loaded with gear. I was very impressed---and wished I would have had their cargo space. Instead I was one of only 2 butt-boaters---and managed to cram 5-days worth of stuff into one large-by-today's-standards kayaks (a Pyranha G:3---9' and 80 gallons).

I must say I see merits to both approaches, but hey, I'm a Libra so I'm always seeing both sides of any issue.

I guess it comes down to your need for beer at the end of the day---a raft's cargo volume obviously helps in that department. But even that isn't so clear cut---one fellow on a 3-day trip I did on the Middle Fork of the Flathead (MT) squirreled away a 12 pack in his boat. I guess he decided he could live without underwear and other extra clothes, but hey, a man's gotta live! No beer? Are you nuts?...

Happy trails,
Dan

(and p.s. Louie, as much as I admire you OC-1ers---a bad roll of the dice has left me knees unable to go that route, so I do the best I can as a butt-boater)
