I was faced with that years ago when the Green was a defining hair run. I hear that it has been downgraded somewhat.
There is nothing wrong with that question. It is definately steep. Basically you need to be comfortable with steep and tight water. The runs that you mentioned are nothing like the Green. I like Johnnies creek as a check for that. It drops around 300 fpm and gets you used to the back to back rapids. That does not mean that you have to run 300 fpm stuff but you need to be ready. If you have a good guide and take your time you can use it as a transition to the steep world. If you really thrive on the steeper sections of some other runs you may be fine. You have to really want to do it and have the ability to break it down rapid by rapid without psyching yourself out. You may be fine. Only you know that about yourself. If you have serious doubts then don't do it. Try some other steepish runs first.
I was ready my first time and had a blast. I had plenty of old timers ask me after I did it if I was going back. I guess that they thought I was trying to prove a point. I simply wanted to do it and wanted to go back. I did have those butterflies in my stomach at the put in. That is natural. I also had a big grin on my face about halfway down. I was ready. Had I tried it a couple of years earlier, I would have been overwhelmed and had a horrible time. I have made the mistake before of getting in over my head before. I have been at the bottom of a gorge looking up and wishing I could just get out. I remember looking down a river with nothing but huge boulders and great big rapids that were above my level. That feeling sucks.
Think it through. If you do it, do it because you are ready and want it. |
