Personally, I read EJ's statement, "I would have made it out on my last attempt with our [sic] with out a hand" a little differently than you.

I interpreted what he said like this: Even though he was blocked his first few attempts, he was more or less on his way out of the hole on the attempt by the time Shipley was able to grab his bow and assist in getting clear of the hole...meaning that he would have gotten out, but would have had to work harder (with a greater chance of slipping back in), if shipley didn't lend a hand.

I don't know if I'm right or wrong...and you don't know either, since neither of us were there as eyewitnesses. Sometimes, when communicating and telling a story on the 'net, details don't get thoroughly explained. That's really no reason to say he "is full of shit" and call him out to get it on video.
