That statistic comes from the assertion that in any given year there are 2 recorded marriages for every 1 recorded divorce.  That does not translate into a 50% divorce probability.  The most accurate statistic is that there are annually about 20 divorces  for every 1000 married women over the age of 15 in the U.S.
