Drowning death of Roberts kayaker still a mystery to investigators
Associated Press

CODY (AP) -- A Montana kayaker who drowned last weekend in the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River was experienced and well-equipped, leaving authorities at a loss to explain the death.

"We're not sure exactly what happened," Park County Sheriff Dave Doyle said. "... The water was high, but not as bad as it has been in recent years past."

Randall F. Anderson, 35, of Roberts, Mont., died Saturday.

According to police reports, Anderson and a friend, Jim Hays of Billings, had been kayaking in the Clarks Fork about 70 miles northwest of Cody in the upper Crandall area of the Shoshone National Forest.

Hays kayaked through the Boulder Drop area of the river and waited for Anderson to follow, the report said. When Anderson failed to appear, Hays went back up the river and located Anderson in his kayak.

Hays saw Anderson come out of his kayak, the report states, and he floated past Hays, who had attempted to throw a rope out to him. Anderson missed the rope and floated down river with the current.

Doyle said Hays last saw Anderson on a rock near what is known as Adrenaline Rapids and ran to a nearby cabin to call for help at about 3:40 p.m.

Anderson was found floating downstream from the rapids by a National Forest employee about 4 p.m., Doyle said.

Efforts on the spot to revive Anderson failed, he said.

Park County Coroner Catherine Valentine ruled the cause of death was drowning.

Doyle said it is not known if Anderson was simply pulled underneath by the river's current or if he struck his head on rocks as he drifted downstream.

"Exactly what happened, we just don't know at this time," he said.
