On Friday, I was on the Upper Yough, which I've run many times. However, I was trying out a new boat. I know both lines at Lost and Found. I decided to take the left line at the top. I waited to pass the little rock that is just under the water and then I started to cross to river right. I'm not sure what happened - maybe I was being a bit laxed - but then my new boat didn't react the way I thought it was going to and the next thing I knew I was passed the rock that you want to be on the right side of - accept I was left.
I was shocked to see the log - I was worried about tombstone - but then to also have another deathtrap in the way. Since, I have never been on that side before - I wasn't quite sure what rock was tombstone - I didn't think I could clear the upstream side of the log so - I chose to run over the submerged part of the log - which of course took me right above tombstone. (which at the time - I wasn't exactly sure it was tombstone) To my relief - I paddled right by tombstone on the right hand side of it.
Obvisously, the group I was paddling with talked about this in length on how lucky I was. I was told via a friend that Jeff Snyder said that if I ever do that again (which I hope never too) - to take the far left line. At the time of the incident - I was just left of the top rock. My view - did not take in the far left side. Matter of fact - all I could see was that F@*% log, so that may be an option for other paddlers who screw up and go left. |
