"A young Counselor for kids from Camp Living Water(Bryson City) who was on a staff paddle trip on the Nanty (his name was Joel and I think he was 17) got caught in an undercut somewhere and drowned Saturday afternoon. I have been trying to find out exactly where on the river this happened. Other very good boaters adept and knowledgeable concerning rescue tried in vain to get him out. Class II water can kill if you end up in the wrong place. As soon as I get more details as to where on the river this happened I will post or if anyone knows, I would like to know. I know Delabars Rock is undercut. Where else is there an undercut? PLease be careful and know where the dangers places are on rivers you paddle and avoid them - something like this is such a bummer. 17 is way too young to die."
Very sad.
