Dead kayaker still not ID'd Authorities seek help, warn of dangers on fast-running river By Coloradoan staff A kayaker who was found dead in the Poudre River on Saturday has not been identified, and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for information. Investigators believe the kayaker drowned accidentally. They believe the man, who is the first Poudre River fatality this year, went kayaking alone because no one has come forward inquiring about a missing person, Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kathy Messick said.
Because of high precipitation this spring and the recent warm temperatures, the Poudre River is higher than it has been in four years, Messick said. She said it also is running faster and has more obstacles than in the recent past.
"It's a little more hazardous than kayakers are used to," she said.
The area of the Poudre River above where the kayaker's body was found close to mile marker 105 had a stretch of narrow, swift and turbulent water that descended to a large rock bank near the river. Messick said the combination is treacherous, even for an experienced kayaker.
