I believe the problem is, don't pull out the lawn chair to watch 20 or 30 people run the drop before you make a decision.
Get out, take a look, make up your mind to run or carry. If you are going to carry, then get on with it. If you take long enough to scout that people are getting out of there boats to walk up and run the drop again, then you have scouted for too long.
Remember Kneely's law. The amount of time spent staring at a hole is directly proportional to the amount of time you will spend getting hammered in the hole.
and the second law, if you can't spit, then you should consider walking the drop.
and the third law. If you think a rapid will kick your ass, it will.
If you can't see a line in 30 seconds, pick up your boat and start walking.
