Forum: BoaterTalk
We had some embarrassing carnage today, and share it only in hopes that another unsuspecting group won't fall into the same predicament. One of our paddlers severely hurt his shoulder after an incident with wood in one of the first rapids of the gorge (determined later to be "go left or die"). We had beta that the Narrows was clean except for a small limb right before the last rapid ("hammer factor"), but our lead boater discovered otherwise when he was swept into and under the before-mentioned log. There is a clear sneak on the right, but if you run the entrance to the left (as we did), you may not be able to stop in time. Luckily the rest of us caught an eddy.
I'm sure this is common local knowledge, but future groups who prefer to do runs with little or no beta (as we do) risk having their lead boater tangle with this log. Brent was gracious enough to drink his bootie beer and share the story on our blog (adirondacksjack.blogspot.com/). Hopefully someone learns from his (our) mistake.
The rest of us will be back in their later this week for redemption - hope to see some of you there.
