...if it is your gear being returned, always offer something (beer, money, etc)...you never know what the person returning it may have had to go through to get the piece of equipment.  Maybe is was just left in a parking lot, or maybe they made a risky ferry above a nasty drop or perhaps even did a live bait swim to get your gear.  You should accept your equipment back as gracefully as your should accept the thank you.
