Is paddling you and your husband's # 1 passion? If so, maybe it's a good idea. I love paddling in the southeast, but if you like the western mountain lifestyle (big mountains, public land, winter sports), I think you'll be restless with the southeast after a year or two. It almost sounds to me like you've had kids in the past few years and are having some homesickness, and think that a temperate rainforest sounds sort of nice (possibly just as a further way to justify your move). Seriously, take a trip to see your family. Stay for a couple of weeks. Do it in the middle of winter. Then ask yourself if you really want to spend all the winters for the rest of your life in 40 degree drizzle. Ask yourself if you really want to ski only 5 days a year on vacation (you'll get plenty of paddling in the west, shorter season, but if you've got a family, the reliability of runoff is really nice). If you've got kids, think about how fun it will be to ski with them on weekends instead of sitting around doing whatever it is people in the southeast do with kids on weekends in the winter.
Maybe the family draw makes it all worth it to you, but, as much as I love my parents, I was just miserable after experiencing life in the west then trying to live in the SE. I've seen others make that move back east, sort of regret it, but get caught in a career to the point where there's no return to the west. I think they're happy, but I think they'd be happier somewhere else. Be careful of that. |
