Bar was pointing perpendicular to teh current, with an accute angle (so the space between bar and river bottom closing as you move downstream).

I was jammed, tail river right pinned on a rock, noe river left, under the bar across my lap. I had to flip "upstream". The idea was to get the bar off my lap so I could get out of the boat, using the force of the water coming from upstream to help me flip as no way just with my force. But the trade off was I could have ended jsut getting wedged further under, folding the boat... with me in it, flipping totally and getting smashed against the bottom between the bat and the bottom with the bar on top.

But given I was running out of air anyway, I really had nothing to loose going for broke. making the situation worse was not really going to be any worse than totally f*#ked anyway....

it was a gamble, and if it had gone wrong (and I'd survived anyway) I might today being seconf guessing my decision. Because it wen well, it seems like it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, the amazing thing was how calm I was at the time... I jsut sort of accepted my fate and thought to myself "I've had a good run of life. There are worse ways and places to die than kayaking in italy".

Strange that I was so calm. I would ahve thought shere terror would have set in.
