I appreciate your honesty and the insightfulness of your questions regarding the decision to continue. This was not a decision that any of us took lightly, or which was not well discussed: Regarding access: After the rescue we had the opportunity to speak with several park rangers regarding the creek. One of them even kayaks! They asked us a few times if we were going to run it out, but not in a joe-ranger-safety way. They seemed to just be geniunely interested in learning about kayaking on the creek and our plans regarding it. All of us were shocked that they didn't have any objections to our continuing, though at the time we weren't sure what we were going to do. About a half-hour after everyone (rangers and emergency-types) had left the creek, we had all exchanged video footage, rested, had some food and water. I gathered everyone and asked "What now?" We spent some time discussing options. They all involved visiting Bobby, but we were confident that we wouldn't be able to see him until later. We were also confident that he was going to be ok. We had all driven 2 1/2-3 1/2 hours to this creek with only creek-boats. Everyone's energy level was high. It was only 2:00. We ALL decided as a group that we were up to paddling this creek. If we had decided otherwise, we didn't know of other runs in the area that we were up to, and sitting around the hospital waiting didn't sound appealing. We ran conservative lines, all carried one rapid (Goliath), and scouted everything. Some carried rapids that others didn't.
Hope this helps! Stephen Wright
