Buy him a copy of Nichol's Guidebook before he goes, and then the Southern Rockies is a good guide to the larger "Intermountain" region.

The UWC board has been mentioned, there's regular groups paddling the Henefer-Taggart section still on Tuesday nights here at the end of the "irrigation season", but it's going to be all shutting down soon. There's excellent stuff starting at about the 3-hour drive radius, Idaho is great, etc.

If you can generalize your interests to encompass the greater outdoors, Utah is hard to beat for skiing, hiking, etc., etc.
