Below is an e-mail from my Senator, dated August 5.
I know the deadline to comment to the Forest Service has passed, but the fight now moves into the political arena. Its now time to send your Congressmen and Senators your letters. Just adjust the letter you've already sent, but now ask them to write a letter to the park service supporting unrestricted boating in the Upper Chattooga.

Numbers do count to Senators and Congressmen. If enough voters/boaters contact them they might take action. Otherwise, here's what they'll do:

Dear Mr. Maxwell:
Thank you for contacting me regarding boating restrictions on the Chattooga River. I appreciate hearing from you and appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I understand the frustration of many boaters with the decision by the U.S. Forest Service to uphold the ban on boating on certain portions of the Chattooga River. In response to the outpouring of concern over the U.S. Forest Service's decision, the U.S. Forest Service extended the public comment period regarding this ban until August 15, 2008. I am confident that the Forest Service's decision will be in the best interest of all users of the Chattooga River.
