sports like skateboarding do have that advantage when it comes to the mass media perspective. on the other hand i have seen a lot of paddling videos that have some pretty amazing footage of the waves at the dries of even the world championships at buseater as well as many other world class features, it still doesn't translate to the non boater. i have shown mutiple videos to non boatind friends and family and they just lose interest very quickly. the usual response is that it's all the same and the danger is just not percieved as easily to them. now i will agree that freestyle has progressed rapidly in the last few years and there are many more tricks out there to be done. i don't feel like the competitive format really takes advantage of people pushing their limits in our sport however. just watch any kayaking competition most rides are almost exactly the same from one boater to the next.
on the other hand show these same people movies like the green race movie and they get excited. they can understand a race format and they love the carnage. love the carnage, where is that in a freestyle competition? we may flip or get swallowed by a wave but roll right back up and paddle to shore. we aren't getting dragged out of the river and put on a backboard after a freestyle crash on a wave or hole. events like the giant slalom we had on the green a couple of weeks ago i feel could draw huge interest in the non boating community, the race format is easy for people to understand as well as there being some great carnage that can still be safely managed on the course. yes having more cammera shots for that would be great and would definately help with promotion.
