for me i remember seeing the olympic kayaking and canoeing slaloms back in '84 and '88, i had no availability to the sport but the idea of what was possible held with me untill about '96 when i got my first white water kayak which brought about the transformation of me as a white water boater.
yes, i agree that the majority of viewers would like to be able to just run right out to the store and grab the toys needed for 100$ or so and that is one of the leading draws to sports like skateboarding. however if you want to compare that with snowboarding which is almost equally as popular you pay close to 750$ for boots/bindings and board and then you have to buy the winter clothing and the lift tickets which aren't cheap. they do however have very similar competitions to skateboarding displaying equally huge tricks yet maintaining a price tag which is much similar to that of kayaking.
just remember that because something isn't readily available for someone it doesn't mean that they aren't interested.
