It happens occasionally.
If the water's too shallow to really roll yet there's still current pulling you along, you will have too plant the paddle on the river bottom ahead of your boat; otherwise if you try to pole off the bottom at the side of your boat, the current has already pushed you past the paddle before you can do anything. I learned this one the hard way. It doesn't always work, either, but it might save you a swim.
