It seems the common denominator is the ratchet straps.  I know kayakers who carry spare ratchet straps with them in a drybag.  I think the Jackson Kayaks backband system is decent, but is somewhat sloppy.  Wavesport is the only company who has this under control the best, where the load on the backband is distributed through the cockpit rim, so all the force is not exerted on the ratchet straps.  Dagger's flip switch is also good, but have had those pop loose while kayaking. 

The only way to make a truly solid back band is to remove its ease of adjustment.  There must be a sacrifice either way.
