towards the end of my 10 years of shoulder problems i switched to handpaddles exclusively for playboating/river running and kept using a paddle for creeking. i think this helped but handpaddling is not a guaranteed fix especially if you have never handpaddled much as it could lend to some water slapping that could make you worse. if you do make a switch i'd recommend handpaddles on the smallish side and going a few times with someone that knows good handpaddling technique. i think there is a real need for handpaddling instructors. but switching to a new form of paddling while injured is a bad idea in my opinion. it can be a great adjunct as part of the recovery process but if you have had recent "twinges and strains" it's best to just take a break first. good luck and let us know how it turns out. |
