With the high gas prices we try to carpool together as many as possible.
Placing your gear in the boats leaves more room in the vehicle.
Several of my friends use the plastic type. The neoprene type would be a lot better at keeping things secure.The only drawback is getting the boats back on the racks with gear inside. They do become heavy and hard to grab hold of but, 2 people can still load them ok.
